Ideas for Coaches!

11/12/12  In an effort to foster relationships between the older & younger quizzers(including the juniors), we have an activity called "Buddy Time." The buddies are assigned at the first or second practice and continue all year(usually 1 older and 1-2 younger). During the 10-15 minutes that they meet, the buddies will talk about good/frustrating things going on with quizzing, share prayer requests and pray together. Sometimes we assign a topic to discuss but most of the time we just let the older quizzer be in charge. The kids really look forward to this time together and ask about it if for some reason we don't do it.

11/10/12 - At the start of each month, have your team each write out a monthly study plan.  Review it with them to make sure it is realistic, and have them share it with their parents.  Then have your quizzer email you a couple times a week to tell you how they are doing.

11/09/12 – At quiz practice, play “Wheel of Fortune” quizzing for a change of pace.  Come up with a phrase like “Quizzing is Fun”, and a line for each letter on a white board.  Start asking questions.   When a quizzer answers correctly, they get to pick a letter, and if that letter is in the puzzle, you then write the letter.  If they get a correct letter, they can try to solve the puzzle.

11/08/12 - Musical Chairs quizzing – If you have more than 15 at a practice, this is a fun way to rotate quizzers into the quiz.  Have 15 take the chairs and the others line up to the side.  Ask the first question.  While the quizzer is answering, the first quizzer in line takes his/her place.  After answering, the quizzer takes the last place in line.

11/03/12 – 4 Minute Quizzing.  This drill is best done with the stronger teams, and only on weeks where they are all prepared.  Put four minutes on the clock, and see how many points the team can score.  They need to answer as quickly as possible to reserve time for future questions.  Each team member needs to score to get the team bonuses.  This will teach the team to answer quickly, and puts some pressure on all of them to score.  We use this a lot on our top National’s teams right before Nationals.
